On a hill 3 km from Potes, in the direction of Fuente Dé, there is a church with a cloister. This is the oldest monastery in Spain. The relic is preserved there, a fragment of the holy cross on which Christ was crucified and is known as the “lignum crucis”.
The fragment was brought from the Holy Land by Saint Toribius in the 5th century and has been stored in the monastery since then.
It attracts many thousands of pilgrims each year.
