Markt in Potes

Don’t forget the traditional regional delicacies such as the delicious cheeses, cured meats, ham and of course the wine, cider and pomace for which this region is known. There are wine tastings, a pomace festival and also a visit to the cheese factory is possible.

Cheese

The Liébana valley, of which Potes is the nucleus, is known for its cheese. The most typical cheese of the region is called TresLeches. Made with cow’s milk, goat’s milk and sheep’s milk. I personally like sheep’s cheese better, but that, of course, is very personal ;)

On the way to Fuente De you pass the Quesaria Rio Deva cheese factory (Calameño). I always get some cheeses there from Bisi. She will love it when you come. You can also take the cheese making tour at certain times.

Sausage and Ham

For artisanal sausages and other tastier sausages, it is best to go to the Juanito butcher shop (calle San Roque 5) in the center of Potes. Send my regards to Fonsin ;)

Wine and Pomace

Two types of grapes grow in the estate’s vineyard: Mencía and Jerez. Liébana wine is made from the harvest of both. Our winegrower’s name is Segundo Camacho. He takes care of our vineyard, harvests and makes the wine. He does the same with several vineyards in this area. He serves wine and pomace from the different vineyards in his bar in the center of Potes (see Los Camachos bar). Pomace is a famous local drink. Segundo’s pomace, named after his uncle Mariano Camacho, has already won several awards and the beautiful bottle is for sale at the Los Camachos bar, among others.

Liébana’s local wines are made in the area formed by the municipalities of Pesaguero, Potes, Camaleño, Cabezón de Liébana, Vega de Liébana and Cillorigo de Liébana. Most are red and are made in only 4 wineries. This PGI is located in a mountainous area with humid and cold climates that allow risky viticulture to be carried out, with impossible plantations.

At the Picos de Cabariezo Winery you can taste wine and pomace and, of course, take the tastiest one home.

Markets

Every Monday morning there is a market in Potes where you can buy all kinds of local delicacies, from the square to the large parking lot.
